Q&A:
I tried making these with the bread crust on and the the crust came out really hard. For the best results, I recommend cutting the crust off of the bread.
You can store the leftover bread crust in an airtight Zip Loc bag and use them later to make homemade croutons, bread crumbs, or Cinnamon Sugar Bread Crust Treats.
What to serve with Grilled Cheese Roll Ups?
- Tomato soup! Perfect for dipping these roll ups in.
- Chicken noodle soup
- Crinkle cut French fries
- Hard boil eggs
- Potato chips
- Salad (Caesar or spinach)
- Marinara sauce for dipping
- Sweet potato fries
- Fresh fruit
- Carrot sticks
- Broccoli
Equipment Needed:
- Air Fryer
- Rolling Pin
Ingredients:
- Sliced bread - soft bread works the best.
- Butter - melted
- Cheese - I used shredded Colby Jack cheese, but you can use other kinds of cheese too. I’ve found that shredded cheese and soft cheese like American cheese slices work best because they won't tear the bread when rolling.
Air Fryer Instructions:
1. Preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees Fahrenheit and set the timer to 6 minutes.
2. Start by cutting the crust from the slices of bread (a serrated knife works best for this).
3. Roll each slice of bread flat with the rolling pin. Make sure they are completely flat.
4. Add about 2 tablespoons of cheese to each slice, then tightly roll.
5. Brush melted butter on the top and sides of each roll up.
6. Place roll ups into the air fryer, seam down, and cook for 6 minutes or until golden brown. Be sure to check on them halfway through.
7. Once they are done, remove them from air fryer and let them cool. Enjoy them as they are, with some soup, or with your favorite dipping sauce.
Stove Top Instructions:
1. Start by cutting the crust from the slices of bread (a serrated knife works best for this).
2. Roll each slice of bread flat with the rolling pin. Make sure they are completely flat.
3. Add about 2 tablespoons of cheese to each slice, then tightly roll.
4. Brush melted butter on all sides of each roll up.
5. To a nonstick pan, add the grilled cheese rolls ups, seam down, and cook over medium high heat until all sides are golden brown.
6. Once done, remove roll ups from the pan and let cool. Enjoy them as they are, with some soup, or with your favorite dipping sauce.
Recipe Variations:
- Grilled Cheese Roll Ups with tortillas - You can totally make these using tortilla wraps instead of bread.
- Cheese - I tested these using a variety of cheeses and found that shredded cheese or American cheese slices work the best because they are soft and won't tear the bread while folding. Mozzarella cheese sticks worked great too, just be sure to cut them into fourths lengthwise. I also tried using cheddar cheese slices and it was hard to roll the bread without it ripping the bread. I had to cut the cheddar cheese into strips and then I was able to roll them up without any tears to the bread.
- Try adding some cooked bacon crumbles or ham. Yum!
Make Ahead Method:
You can make these a day or two ahead of time. Assemble the roll up as directed, minus the butter. Do not cook. Wrap each individual roll tightly with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Once you are ready to cook them, remove the plastic wrap and continue following the recipe where you left off.
Storage and Reheating Instructions:
- If you have any leftovers, store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- To reheat, preheat the air fryer to 360 degrees Fahrenheit and heat for 1-2 minutes.
Pro Tips:
- Be sure to use soft bread. Stale or hard bread doesn’t work that well with this recipe.
- Soft cheese like shredded cheese or American cheese slices work best for this recipe because they are soft and won’t tear the bread when rolling.
- Make sure to butter these up really good on all sides before air frying them.
- Expect these to be slightly crispier than stove top grilled cheese roll ups.
- Tightly roll the roll ups so that they do not come undone in the air fryer. I had one of the roll ups open up the first time I tested this recipe but making sure I rolled them tightly solved that problem. You can also press firmly on the roll up at the end of the rolling process to flatten it a little which will also help it stay in tact.
- When placing the roll ups in the air fryer basket, align the ends so that they are facing front to back and not side to side. This will help to prevent them from rolling out of place or unrolling when pushing in and pulling out the air fryer basket during the cooking process.
- As always, be sure to check on these halfway through the cooking time.
- I used my Instant Vortex Plus 6 quart air fryer to test this recipe. Since all air fryers are different, you will need to adjust this recipe based on what air fryer you are using.
