Baked Potato Air Fryer vs Microwave:
While the microwave may be the fastest way to cook a baked potato, you will miss out on that steakhouse crispy potato skin that the air fryer produces. You can combine cooking methods by first cooking the potato in the microwave and finishing it up in the air fryer, that way you get that crispy skin while saving time. If you prefer that way, see my instructions below. Personally, I prefer and believe the more hands-off method of cooking the potato in the air fryer from start to finish is the best method. I can put the potatoes in the air fryer and then work on making my main dish.
Q&A:
Yes, you will need to pierce your potatoes so that the steam created during the cooking process can escape. Otherwise, the potatoes can split.
Yes, please see the instructions below.
On average, air fried baked potatoes take 40 minutes to cook in the air fryer at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. This is for medium sized russet potatoes. More time will be required for larger potatoes.
The salt makes the potato skin crispy and adds flavor.
You can prick the potato with a fork or knife to determine if the inside is soft.
No, I would not recommend wrapping the baked potatoes in foil because that will make the skin soft instead of crispy.
Absolutely! The skin is tasty and has nutritious fiber according to Idahopotato.com. Just be sure to scrub the outside of the potato clean before cooking.
Yes, you can make a baked potato for one. Just follow the recipe below as directed. No time adjustment is needed.

Equipment Needed:
- Air Fryer
Ingredients:
- Olive Oil - I used olive oil, but you can use whatever cooking oil you’d regularly use.
- Coarse Sea Salt - Course salt works best for this recipe to give the potatoes that delicious crispy skin. Kosher salt would work as well.
- Russet Potatoes - Russet potatoes are best for this recipe because they have a high starch content, making them nice and fluffy once cooked.
- Butter - I used unsalted butter.
- Sour Cream - I used full fat sour cream.
- Shredded Cheddar or Cheddar Jack Cheese - You can use pre-shredded cheddar cheese or grade your own.
- Cooked Crumbled Bacon - I used store-bought bacon bits. They were 100 percent real bacon bit pieces. You could also make your own if needed, but I like the convenience of store-bought bacon bits.
- Chopped Green Onion - These steakhouse style potatoes wouldn’t be complete without green onions!

6. Add butter to the open potato and use a fork to mash the inside of the potato.

Recipe Variations And Substitutions:
- Olive oil - I used olive oil but you can use whatever cooking oil you prefer, or bacon grease.
- Course Sea Salt - Kosher salt can be used instead if preferred.
- Sour Cream - Greek yogurt or full fat soften cream cheese can be substituted.
- Green Onion - Scallions, chives, or spring onions can be used.

- I used medium sized potatoes and cooking time depends on the size of the potatoes you use. Larger potatoes will take longer to get done.
